Heavy rain warnings issued for western parts of South Island on October 17; associated flooding and traffic disruptions possible

The New Zealand Meteorological Service issued heavy rain warnings for western parts of South Island on Thursday, October 17, as a weather system moves towards the region. Severe weather warnings are in effect for northwest Nelson, Buller, and most of Westland until the morning (local time) of Saturday, October 19. According to current forecasts, rainfall totals between 14-18 cm (6-7 in) are expected in northwest Nelson and Buller between 23:00 on Thursday through 06:00 on Saturday. Rainfall totals between 12-17 cm (5-7 in) are anticipated in Westland between 02:00 on Thursday to 23:00 on Friday, October 18.

Associated flooding and hazardous driving conditions are possible in the affected areas.

Individuals in the abovementioned areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm road conditions prior to heading out, and allow additional time to travel. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
