Reports of pro and anti-government protests in Seoul on October 9; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

Thousands of protesters gathered near Seoul's presidential palace on Wednesday, October 9, demanding the resignation of President Moon Jae-in and the country's Justice Minister Cho Kuk amid corruption allegations related to Cho Kuk's family. A counter-protest was reportedly simultaneously held in Yeouido, in the southwest of Seoul, gathering around 2000 people. Participants are denouncing the Justice Ministry as politically motivated and calling for the overhaul of the law enforcement agency.
Additional demonstrations are expected on Saturday, October 12. The pro-government rally is scheduled near the Seoul Central Prosecutor's Office in the south of the city, while the scheduled anti-government rally will take place at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul.
Traffic disruptions a heightened security presence are anticipated around all protest sites.
