South Korea: Typhoon alerts issued for southern regions Oct. 2 /update 2

Officials issue typhoon alerts for southern parts of South Korea, including Jeju Island, on October 2 as Typhoon Mitag approaches; heavy rain and strong winds expected

The Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued typhoon alerts for southern parts of the country, including Jeju Island, South Jeolla province, Gwangju, Hongdo, and the southern seas on Wednesday, October 2. Typhoon Mitag is forecast to make landfall in South Jeolla near Mokpo on Wednesday evening (local time) before crossing the southern provinces into the East Sea. Heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous surf are expected as the storm moves through the region. Rainfall totals between 10-30 cm (4-12 in) are possible on Jeju, while totals may reach up to 60 cm (24 in) in mountainous areas of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces. Flooding, landslides, and power outages are possible in the region in the coming days. According to media reports, 255 flights on Jeju Island were canceled on Wednesday, and schools were closed. Further transportation and business disruptions are possible through Thursday, October 3.

As of 13:00 on Wednesday, Typhoon Mitag is located at approximately 32.7°N 124.2°E (map here) and is moving northeast at 30 kph (19 mph). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 97 kph (60 mph).

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
