Panama: Protests continue in Panama City November 6 /update 1

Event

Thousands of Panamanians opposed to constitutional reform have continued to protest in Panama City on Wednesday, November 6. Protesters gathered at the 5 de Mayo metro station. Previous protests have also been reported near the University of Panama.

Participants that were previously arrested for participating in the protests will have hearings on Thursday, November 7, and Friday, November 8, which raises the possibility of additional protests on these dates. Groups have also voiced concerns over authorities' use of excessive force.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the capital due to the possibility of protests, as well as in the vicinity of any scheduled protest. Additional protests remain possible in Panama City and other urban centers over the coming several days and weeks. 

Context

If approved, the constitutional reforms proposed by the government would modify articles related to the administration of justice, health, education, the environment, decentralization and Parliament's operation.
