Panama: Heightened security likely ahead of general election on May 5

Authorities likely to tighten security in Panama ahead of general election on May 5. Protests possible.

Informational

Officials will likely tighten security measures near election-related facilities nationwide ahead of the May 5 general election. Voting will take place 07:00-16:00 at polling stations across the country. As part of security measures, officials may implement additional checkpoints, increase patrolling, and secure key locations.

Security measures on election day will likely prompt road closures, particularly near polling stations, and disrupt travel and business operations. Security-related transit disruptions are possible into at least early May 6. Election-related unrest also remains possible, and clashes cannot be ruled out.

Exercise caution in the lead-up to and during voting, particularly near large gatherings and in the proximity of polling stations. Make allowances for possible localized transport disruptions near polling stations. Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Confirm appointments.

As well as a president and vice-president, voters will also elect 71 deputies for the National Assembly, 81 mayors, 11 councilors, and 701 township representatives. The elected officials will serve their mandates from July 1 through June 30, 2029.
