Canada: 6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Port Hardy (British Columbia) December 24

Event

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km (6 mi) approximately 182 km (113 mi) west of Port Hardy (British Columbia province) at around 19:36 (local time) on Tuesday, December 24. No casualties or significant material damages were immediately reported, and a tsunami warning was not issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
