Lebanon: Flooding brings swaths of Beirut to standstill December 9

Significant flooding was reported in many parts of Beirut on Monday, December 9, amid an already tense socioeconomic environment and ongoing anti-government protests. Many neighborhoods in Beirut were affected, with some residents resorting to kayaks as means of transportation.

The ongoing financial crisis, a source for the protests, made it difficult for the government to respond quickly to residents' needs of support under flooding conditions.

Disruptions to business and transportation may continue on Tuesday, December 10, as the situation normalizes.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, confirm flight reservations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
