Chad: Public sector workers to strike nationwide January 7-9

The president of the Association of Chad Trade Unions (UST) announced on Monday, January 6, that public sector workers voted to launch a nationwide three-day strike during a general assembly meeting in the capital N’Djamena. Public sector workers will strike from Tuesday, January 7, through Thursday, January 9, to demand the reinstatement of their bonuses and allowances that were cut by 50 percent in August 2016, among other issues. According to union leaders, during the work stoppage minimum service will be provided at all hospitals but schools will remain closed. Another general assembly is scheduled to be held on Saturday, January 11, to discuss further actions if the unions’ demands are not met.

Associated demonstrations by the striking workers may take place across the country, particularly in N'Djamena. Disruptions to medical services are also possible, including longer waiting times or canceled appointments. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected around all demonstration sites.

Context

Union members voted to strike after negotiations with the government broke down on Saturday, January 4. Workers are also calling for the government to lift a 50 percent reduction in specific general increases (AGS) that were put in place in January 2017.
