Guinea: Opposition coalition announces further nationwide protests January 14 /update 23

The Front National pour la Défense de la Constitution (FNDC) opposition coalition has called for peaceful nationwide demonstrations to continue on Tuesday, January 14. A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions should be anticipated near all demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

At least two people were reportedly killed during nationwide FNDC-organized protests on Monday, January 13. Opposition supporters claim a university student was killed by police officers during clashes in the Cosa area of Conakry. Guinea's security ministry also confirmed a fatality in the city of Labé. According to media reports, shops and schools across the capital Conakry were closed on Monday and most streets remained empty of traffic. FNDC leaders claim that peaceful protests were held in multiple cities across the country until security forces violently dispersed demonstrators in some areas.

Context

The FNDC has organized several opposition demonstrations since October 14, some of which have turned violent. Opposition members allege that President Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution in order to allow him to run for a third presidential term in late 2020. President Condé publicly called for a constitutional referendum on December 19.
