Montenegro: Protests possible during Orthodox Christmas January 6-8 /update 1

Protests possible across Montenegro during Orthodox Christmas January 6-8; heightened security presence likely

Warning

Event

UK diplomatic authorities have warned that protests against the newly-instituted Law on Religious Freedoms may erupt in urban centers across Montenegro during Orthodox Christmas, which will be celebrated from Monday, January 6, until Wednesday, January 8. The law, passed on December 27, requires religious communities in Montenegro to prove property ownership from before 1918. Opponents of the Law on Religious Freedoms claim the legislation is in violation of the constitution and would strip the Serbian Orthodox Church of its property. Several demonstrations protesting the law have been reported throughout the country in recent days.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are expected in the vicinity of any demonstration sites.

Advice

Individuals in Montenegro are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to business and transportation around protest sites.
