Boko Haram attack kill four Nigerian soldiers, injure five others in Borno state on January 15; similar attacks likely in the near term.

At least four Nigerian soldiers were killed, and seven others injured in a Boko Haram attack in Auno village (Borno state), which is located on the highway linking Maiduguri and Damaturu (Yobe state), on Wednesday, January 15. Militants have reportedly looted and burnt an unspecified number of shops following the attack. It remains unclear whether there were any militant casualties.
Similar attacks are possible in Borno state over the coming weeks.
Context
The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) are highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Although the Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents back from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
