Peru: Increased activity at Sabancaya volcano January 16
Increased activity reported at Sabancaya volcano on January 16; transportation disruptions possible

The Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) issued a warning on Thursday, January 16, following a surge in activity of the Sabancaya volcano. Sabancaya, located around 80 km (50 mi) from Arequipa, began spewing ash and smoke on Tuesday, January 14. On Thursday, a volcanic ash column rose up to estimated 7600 m (25,000 ft).
Disruptions to transportation are possible in the vicinity of the volcano over the coming hours and days, particularly in the event of a hazardous eruption.
