Turkey: Death toll rises following 6.7-magnitude earthquake January 24 /update 2

Government officials confirmed that at least 14 people have been killed and 200 others injured following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Doğanyol (Malatya province) on Friday, January 24. According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), six of the fatalities occurred in Malatya, and eight others in neighboring Elazığ province. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as of early Saturday morning (local time), January 25 to free people believed to be trapped under collapsed apartment buildings.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. 

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
