Earthquake death toll rises to 41 as rescue efforts called off January 27; aftershocks possible in the region over the near term

As of Monday, January 27, the death toll rose to 41 from a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Turkey's Elazığ province on Friday, January 24, as Turkish authorities called off rescue operations. The earthquake reportedly caused 37 deaths in Elazığ province and four other deaths in adjacent Malatya province; over 1600 others were injured in the earthquake.
Aftershocks are possible in the region over the near term.
