Peru: Heavy rain causes flooding, landslides across Peru February 24

Recent heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides across Peru, which have left at least eight people dead as of Monday, February 24. Over the weekend, three people were killed in a landslide in Tacna region and two others were killed in a landslide in Puno region. On the afternoon (local time) of Sunday, February 23, three people were killed and 13 others were injured in a landslide in Santa Teresa district (Cusco region), prompting local officials to declare a state of emergency in the district.

Further flooding and landslides are possible in Peru over the near term. Associated transportation and commercial disruptions are to be expected in affected areas.

Individuals in Peru are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, anticipate transportation and commercial disruptions, budget additional time for travel, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
