Iraq: Casualties reported amid Islamic State (IS) attacks in Diyala province April 18

Event

Nine members of the security forces and two civilians were wounded in four separate attacks by suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in Diyala province on Saturday, April 18. Six soldiers were wounded after an explosive device detonated at a residence in the Khaylania area of Miqdadiya, while a police officer was wounded in another explosion at an unspecified location in the province. Later on Saturday, two soldiers were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint in the provincial capital Baqubah. The two civilians were wounded when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated in the village of Kanaan.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Diyala province over the coming days. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

Although former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq. IS militants continue to carry out attacks, notably against security forces. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.
