Iraq: Mustafa al-Kadhimi tapped as prime minister-designate April 9

On Thursday, April 9, President Barham Salih tapped the head of Iraq's National Intelligence Service (NIS), Mustafa al-Kadhimi, as prime minister-designate. The announcement came hours after the previously designated prime minister, Adnan al-Zurfi, resigned due to a lack of support. Al-Kadhimi will have 30 days to form a government, which will then require parliamentary approval. According to local media sources, al-Kadhimi has already garnered the support of several influential political blocs, such as the Fatah Alliance, the State of Law Coalition, and the National Wisdom Movement.

Associated demonstrations are possible despite ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related restrictions on movement.
