Malaysia: Heavy rains cause flash flooding in Penang April 26

Heavy rains in Penang which began from 15:00 (local time) and lasted for approximately two hours on Sunday, April 26, caused flash flooding in Kepala Batas, Permatang Buluh, Lahar Yooi, Nyior Sebatang, Sungai Dua, Machang Bubok, Tasek Gelugor, Simpang Ampat, Bagan Ajam and Merbau Kudung. Several houses in Seberang Perai have purportedly been damaged by the storm. Authorities did not issue any evacuation orders and flood waters have reportedly subsided. Inspections are currently ongoing to determine the number of damaged homes.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
