Somalia: IED blast leaves four dead in Lower Shabelle province April 9

Event

At least four civilians were killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Awdheegle (Lower Shabelle province) on Thursday, April 9. A group of civilians was reportedly walking near the K60 road area when they accidentally struck the landmine, causing it to detonate. Reports indicate that two other civilians in the group sustained injuries in the explosion.

Although no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, al-Shabaab militants are known for planting roadside bombs and landmines to target Somali security forces.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu.
