Guinea: Protesters clash with security forces in Kindia region May 12

On Tuesday, May 12, at least seven people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces in Coyah and Dubréka subprefectures (Kindia region). The protesters were demonstrating against roadblocks set up to control traffic between the capital Conakry and the rest of the country as part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). At least six people were killed in Coyah, where demonstrators vandalized police stations and vehicles, before police officers opened fire on them. Protests also turned violent at the Kénèdé in Dubréka subprefecture, leading to the death of one demonstrator and the injury of another.

Further violent unrest is possible in Kindia region over the near term.
