Iraq: Reports of IDF strike near Baghdad International Airport (BGW) May 6

Event

An IDF attack was reported in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport (BGW) on Wednesday, May 6, at 04:48 (local time). Three rounds landed in the airport's perimeter, which hit the US Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center (BDSC) compound. A possible fourth impact occurred at the Al-Muthanna Base (M2A2) which is owned by the Iraqi government and is situated to the north east of BGW. The attacks have yet to be confirmed by the Iraqi government.

Similar attacks targeting US facilities are possible in Iraq over the near term.

Context

This is the latest attack on US assets in Iraq, which have occurred regularly since late 2019 by Iran-backed militias in Iraq. The attack coincides with the Iraqi Parliament's vote on May 6 to approve Prime Minister-designate Mustafa Al-Kadhimi's proposed cabinet. Parliament has failed to approve cabinets for two previous prime minister designates, marking deadlock in the political ranks.
