Chile: Flooding and power outages reported across multiple regions June 29

Flooding and power outages affect thousands across multiple regions June 29; associated disruptions expected

Warning

Event

On Monday afternoon (local time), June 29, local authorities have reported flooding and subsequent power outages across the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Santiago Metropolitan, O'Higgins, and Maule. News reports suggest that more than 23,000 homes could be affected in these regions by flooding and/or power outages. Additionally, the rain has reportedly caused landslides and infrastructural damage in Valparaíso, and significant flooding was also reported in Talca's historic district as two canals overflowed in the region.

Associated flooding and landslides, as well as transportation, business, power, and communication service disruptions, may be expected over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
