A truck driver was wounded after being fired on by unidentified gunmen on Route P-65R in Contulmo commune (Arauco province; Bio Bio region) on Friday, June 19. The driver sought assistance from security personnel, who were then reportedly fired on. A police vehicle was damaged by bullets and security forces returned fire. Other incidents were recorded in the area on Friday afternoon (local time), with armed men reportedly setting fire to two vehicles between the communes of Contulmo and Puren. Although it was not confirmed what group was behind these incidents, several recent attacks and arson episodes in Bio Bio and Arauncia provinces have been claimed by Mapuche community members, who are demanding the release of imprisoned Mapuche.
Further low-level violence by indigenous groups is possible in the area and a heightened security presence is expected over the near term.
