El Salvador: Tropical Storm Amanda leaves 18 people dead June 1 /update 2

Tropical Storm Amanda has claimed the lives of at least 18 people with many more missing as of Monday, June 1. Emergency workers continue to search for survivors in many areas of the country that have experienced flooding and landslides following the storm's passing. Thousands of people have also been evacuated from flooded and wind-damaged areas and have been placed in some 80 shelters nationwide. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has warned that further landslides are expected over the next week as rains are expected to persist. At least 83 serious landslides have also blocked vehicular access to many roads in the country.

Associated flooding, infrastructure damage, power outages, and transportation disruptions are possible in the country over the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
