Malaysia: Authorities evacuate over a thousand due to flooding in Johor state June 21

Health and Environment officials placed 1210 people from 288 families from five districts of Johor state in 18 temporary relief shelters on Sunday, June 21, due to floods following heavy rainfall in the region. The districts concerned are Pontian, Batu Pahat, Muar, Kluang, and Tangkak. Authorities will test victims for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and social distancing measures will be in place at relief centers. Although rainfall continued through Sunday, water levels have begun to recede in some areas.

Disruption to transport and business continuity is expected over the coming hours and days due to the flooding. 

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
