Unidentified gunmen attack several military outposts and a patrol in Bekaa Valley on July 13; security operations likely in near term
Event
Unidentified gunmen attacked several military outposts and a security forces patrol in the Baalbek region of the Bekaa Valley on the morning of Monday, July 13. At least one soldier was killed in the overnight attacks on outposts in the Talya, Brital, El-Khodr, and Douris areas, during which they came under small arms fire. Earlier on Sunday, July 12, a criminal suspect and his accomplice had been shot and wounded by security forces after opening fire on troops at a checkpoint in Douris, although it is unclear whether the attacks were connected to the earlier incident.
Security operations and a heightened security forces presence are likely in the Baalbek area in the near term.
Advice
Those in the Bekaa Valley region are advised to remain vigilant and liaise with local authorities to identify high-risk locations and areas with ongoing security operations. Security procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment.
