Morocco: Travel ban implemented in Tangier during Eid al-Adha July 30 - August 1

The Ministry of Religious Affairs announced that the 2020 Eid al-Adha holidays will begin on the evening of Thursday, July 30, and end on the evening of Saturday, August 1. The government spokesman of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Mohamed Mhidia, announced that a travel ban will be implemented during this time amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Individuals and companies operating in the area will not be permitted to leave the city during the holidays. Moroccan authorities have called on its citizens to respect barriers  measures currently in place in an effort to curb further spread of COVID-19.

Significant disruption to public sector services should be expected throughout the holidays.

Context

Eid al-Adha is one of the most widely observed holidays in Islam and coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. According to Islamic customs, worshippers usually slaughter a sheep or goat to share the meat with family and neighbors.
