Chile: 7-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Atacama region September 1

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Atacama region some 75km (46mi) northwest of Vallenar on Tuesday, September 1. The quake struck at 00:09 (local time) at a depth of 10km (6mi). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that there is no tsunami warning following the quake.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
