Chile: Nationwide strike planned beginning on August 27

Truck drivers plan nationwide strike beginning on August 27; avoid any associated protests as precaution

Warning

Event

On Sunday, August 23, Chile's truck drivers have called for nationwide strike action starting on Thursday, August 27, if the National Congress and President Sebastian Piñera do not take action against a recent increase in attacks against them in the Araucania region. The call for nationwide strike comes after a nine-year-old was shot during an attack on her father's truck in Araucania. Chile's National Confederation of Cargo Transport (CNTC) claims that the government has been failing to pass legislation that would prevent such attacks and punish perpetrators.

A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of any protest site, along with disruptions to overland travel.

Context

Armed and violent attacks on transport trucks and factories have become increasingly common in Chile's Araucania region as the region has also been affected by a growing conflict between the government and the indigenous Mapuche group.

Advice

Those in Chile are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid all protests or demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
