Colombia: Demonstrations to take place nationwide August 13

Teachers to hold nationwide demonstrations on August 13; avoid large gatherings as a precaution

Warning

Event

Demonstrations related to an ongoing strike by the Colombian Federation of Education Workers (FECODE) teachers' union are set to take place nationwide on Thursday, August 13. The demonstrations will reportedly be vehicular, and therefore overland disruption is likely.

On Wednesday, August 12, related demonstrations took place in Barranquilla (Atlantico department), Cali (Valle del Cauca department) and Cucuta (Norte de Santander department), and protests seemed to pass off peacefully.

Demonstrators are demanding that the government keep classes virtual until the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has subsided.

Further protests in Colombia are likely in the near term, and associated disruptions are to be anticipated.

Advice

Individuals in Colombia are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
