Czech Republic: Belarus solidarity march held in Prague August 16

Event

Around a thousand people gathered in Prague on Sunday, August 16, to demonstrate their solidarity with Belarussians who have taken to the streets in recent days to denounce the legitimacy of the recent presidential election. The demonstrators unfurled a large Belarussian flag in the capital's Old Town Square as a show of support. There were no reports of unrest during the demonstration and it appears to have passed off peacefully.

Further solidarity protests are possible over the near term whilst the unrest in Belarus continues. Associated transport disruptions are possible in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

Context

Election officials announced on Monday, August 10, that Lukashenko had won 80 percent of the vote in Sunday's poll, with the main opposition candidate Svetalna Tikhanouskaya gaining 9.9 percent. However, opposition groups have denounced the election results as fraudulent and protests following the election have taken place throughout Belarus, with security forces blocking access to a number of cities as clashes with protesters were reported. Security forces have deployed tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, batons, and concussion grenades in attempts to disperse crowds. At least two people have been killed and around 6700 people have reportedly been arrested during the unrest.
