Opposition FNDC postpones its scheduled August 6 Conakry rally to allow for students to sit exams; demonstrations remain possible

Informational

Event

The opposition FNDC (Front National Pour La Defense Constitution) has postponed a scheduled demonstration on Thursday, August 6, set to take place in Conakry to coincide with a planned Rassemblement Pour le Peuple de Guinee (RPG) event. However, due to the FNDC rally clashing with student exams, the event was postponed to a later date.

The RPG event will take place on Wednesday, August 5, and Thursday, at the RPG headquarters in Matoto, Airport district. The event will see candidates being selected for the 2020 presidential elections.

An increased security presence is likely in the capital during the event, and associated demonstrations are possible despite the postponement by the FNDC. Previous related demonstrations took place on July 20, which resulted in injuries to at least 20 people and dozens of arrests.

Advice

Those in Guinea, particularly in Conakry, are advised to monitor developments avoid all protests and political gatherings, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
