Japan: Authorities issue weather warnings for Amami and Okinawa as Typhoon Bavi approaches August 23

Event

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued weather warnings for Amami and Okinawa due to the approach of Typhoon Bavi on Sunday, August 23. Authorities warned of strong winds and heavy rains in some areas.

Typhoon Bavi is located 266km (166mi) to the west of Okinawa and is moving in a northerly direction. Bavi is currently sustaining winds of up to 130kmh (80mph) and is expected to strengthen into a category two storm by Monday, August 24. Bavi is expected to strengthen further as is moves north into the Yellow Sea and is forecast to make landfall in Changyon (North Korea) between Wednesday, August 26, and Thursday, August 27, by which time it will sustain winds of 167kph (103mph).

Context

The typhoon season lasts from May to October, whilst most storm systems form between between July and September. In general, storms can bring heavy downpours and strong winds as well as trigger storm surges which threaten human population and infrastructure. Secondary effects include riverine floods and landslides, both of which can result in human casualties and mass evacuations, as well as travel and service disruptions. Although storm systems usually affect southern Japan, other parts of the country are also vulnerable to these hazards.
