Emerging reports on social media indicate that there has been a large explosion near the port area of Beirut on Tuesday, August 4. The cause and exact location of the blast are currently unknown, as well as if there have been any casualties. Images on social media show that the blast occurred soon after a fire broke out in the area. Further information is awaited.

Multiple witnesses reported blast damage to buildings in the vicinity of the port, including shattered windows up to 4km (2.5 miles).

Disruptions are likely in the city in the near term as emergency services respond to the incident.
