Saudi-led coalition forces intercept missiles targeting Khamis Mushait (Asir province) on August 13; further attacks possible in the near term

Warning

Event

Military sources from the Saudi-led coalition force in Yemen announced on Thursday, August 13, that they had intercepted and shot down two missiles targeting the city of Khamis Mushait (Asir province). The projectiles were reportedly fired by Yemeni Houthi rebel forces on Thursday evening, and followed the interception of a drone on Thursday morning in the same area. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage following the attacks.

No counterstrikes have yet been reported, although a heightened security presence is likely in the area over the near term and further cross-border attacks are possible.

Context

Houthi militants have reportedly fired hundreds of missiles at Saudi Arabia since 2015, when Saudi Arabia began backing the Yemeni government against Houthi separatists in the Yemeni Civil War. Southern Saudi Arabia is a frequent target of Houthi missile attacks, and Riyadh has also seen several missile attacks in the last several months; however, they rarely result in many damages or casualties.

Advice

In the event of a missile attack, individuals in Saudi Arabia are advised to seek shelter, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments.
