US: Rival protesters clash in Portland (Oregon) August 15 /update 7

Event

Black Lives Matter (BLM) demonstrators gathered in front of Portland's Justice Center on Saturday, August 15, for the 80th consecutive day of protests against systemic racism and police brutality. Several dozen right-wing groups also gathered in the location in favor of the police and scuffles broke out between the opposing protesters. According to local media reports, several protesters were armed and two gunshots were heard on Saturday afternoon. No casualties were reported following the gunshots and Portland Police has not commented on the protests but declared that authorities are investigating the event.

Further associated demonstrations are possible in the area in the near term. A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are possible in the vicinity of all demonstrations.

Context

Protesters were demanding federal officers step down from their role of protecting the federal courthouse, the site of much of the unrest in recent weeks. 

Protests began worldwide after US citizen George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired and detained, and one has since been charged with second-degree murder. Protests have since spread to several cities across the US, with solidarity protests taking place throughout the world.
