Flights temporarily halted at Guayaquil Airport (GYE) due to ash fall from Sangay volcano on September 21; residual transport disruptions expected

Informational

Event

On Monday, September 21, operations were halted at Guayaquil Airport (GYE) following heightened volcanic activity from the Sangay volcano. Flights were temporarily suspended to allow authorities to clear the ash fall from the volcano on the runway, with reports stating that some roads were also closed in parts of Los Rios and Chimborazo provinces. Although flight operations have now resumed at GYE, travelers should anticipate residual delays over the coming hours.

Further ash fall and related disruptions cannot be ruled out in the near term.

Advice

Those due to fly out of GYE airport should contact their travel provider to ascertain the status of their flight. Travelers are further advised to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.
