Uruguay: Nationwide strike planned on September 17

Members of the Plenary Syndicates for Workers - National Convention of Workers (PIT-CNT) and several other unions in Uruguay are planning a nationwide 24-hour strike on Thursday, September 17. The protest action will take place as members of unions demand that authorities increase the national unemployment budget. The strike is expected to affect multiple sectors. Members of the National Union for Transportation Workers (UNOTT) and numerous taxi drivers plan to suspend their services from 20:00 (local time) on Wednesday evening, September 16, in preparation for Thursday's strike. The health sector is also expected to only keep operating for emergencies and intensive care units. Additionally, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, among other government departments, are expected to close for the duration of the strike.

The beginning and end times for the strike, and whether it might extend into Friday, September 18, remains unclear. Associated business and transportation disruptions are to be anticipated due to the strike, as well as a heightened security presence in the vicinity of any possible associated protests.
