Warning

Event

Police shot and killed a teenager in the Tatarstan region town of Kukmor on the night of Thursday, October 29, after he attacked officers and attempted to set fire to the police station. The attacker reportedly threw at least two petrol bombs at the police station and vehicles in the adjacent car park before stabbing an officer responding to the incident several times. The teenager was subsequently shot dead by other officers after failing to respond to warnings.

The motive for Thursday's attack is currently unclear, but the Muslim-majority Tatarstan region has seen sporadic low-level extremist attacks and officials announced on Friday, October 30, that they have launched an investigation into the incident as an attempted act of terrorism.

Security and investigative operations are expected to continue in the Kukmor area in the near term, with associated localized disruptions likely.

Advice

Those in the Tatarstan region should monitor developments and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Travelers in the region should maintain a heightened level of vigilance due to the increased terrorism threat and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to police.
