Warning

Event

A protest is scheduled to take place in Lima on Monday, November 16. The demonstration has been called to demand that Congress create a new constitution, following the resignation of interim president Manuel Merino, who previously took over after the removal of president Martin Vizcarra. Demonstrators are scheduled to hold a peaceful march at the Plaza San Martin, where participants are set to gather from approximately 15:00 (local time).

Previous related demonstrations over the last week resulted in two fatalities, over 30 injuries, and at least 30 arrests. Protests are likely to continue in the coming days.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the march.

Context

On Monday, November 9, Peru's Congress voted to impeach Vizcarra over allegations he handed out government contracts in return for bribes. Vizcarra said he would accept the vote, not take any legal action, and leave the presidential palace.

Advice

Those in Peru, particularly in Lima, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any associated protests as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
