Police breaking up an illegal gathering in Callao (Lima district) shot and killed one person on Sunday, November 8. Police were responding to reports of a football match in the Urbanización Aeropuerto, which was being held despite a ban on gatherings due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. A brawl broke out as police attempted to disperse the participants, resulting in a police officer opening fire. Two police officers were reportedly seriously injured during the incident.

A heightened security presence is likely in Callao over the near term, as police investigations into the incident continue. Protests over the excessive use of force cannot be ruled out.
