Peru: Nationwide anti-government demonstrations called for November 12 /update 3

Nationwide anti-government demonstrations called for on November 12; avoid protests as a precaution

Warning

Event

Activists plan to hold nationwide anti-government protests on Thursday, November 12, against the removal of former President Martin Vizcarra from power and the swearing-in of Manuel Merino as interim president. The main event, likely to be very well attended, is scheduled to take place in the capital Lima, where participants will march from Plaza San Martin to Congress from 17:00 (local time). Demonstrations are to be expected elsewhere across the country.

A heightened security presence and associated disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Context

On Monday, November 9, Peru's Congress voted to impeach Vizcarra over allegations he handed out government contracts in return for bribes. Vizcarra said he would accept the vote, not take any legal action, and leave the presidential palace.

Advice

Those in Peru, particularly in Lima, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any associated protests as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
