A magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurred in northern Chile at 1220 CLT Dec. 14. The epicenter was about 75 km (47 miles) north-northeast of Calama. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 114 km (71 miles), and light to moderate shaking was reported in parts of the Antofagasta and Tarapaca regions.
There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
