Guinea: Opposition groups seek to protest inauguration ceremony for President Alpha Conde on Dec. 15
Protester groups to demonstrate against inauguration of President Alpha Conde in Conakry, Guinea, Dec. 15. Avoid the vicinity of the event.
Event
Political opposition groups plan to protest the inauguration ceremony for President Alpha Conde's third term on Dec. 15. The event will occur at the Palace of Mohammed V (formerly the Palace of Nations). Opposition political parties and civil society groups have stated their intentions to protest the event. The start time of the event and related protests are unclear. Protester gathering points in Conakry are also unclear.
Despite the plans to demonstrate, authorities in Guinea currently have a ban on political gatherings and demonstrations, ostensibly as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Protesters have stated that demonstrations will continue despite the ban.
Heightened security and transportation disruptions are almost certain to occur. Security forces will likely deploy to protest areas. Protesters may gather near government buildings, in city or town centers, and along major road routes in Greater Conakry. Authorities will likely use force to disperse any protests that may materialize. Government supporters may hold counter-rallies; clashes between the two groups could occur.
Context
The Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) and the National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy (ANAD) have held multiple nationwide protests in the past several months. Recent rallies have been called to demand the release of political prisoners and justice for persons killed in the aftermath of the Oct. 18 election. The planned Dec. 15 protests will also likely serve as a continued symbol of opposition to President Alpha Conde, who has claimed victory in the Oct. 18 election while the opposition has rejected the outcome.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe, non-governmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions and allow additional travel time near gatherings.
