India: All India Motor Transport Congress plans regionwide strike in northern India beginning December 8; confirm transport reservations

Truckers threaten indefinite strike in northern India from Dec. 8. Transport disruptions and delivery delays likely if action proceeds.

Warning

Event

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), an organization representing the interests of goods transporters, has threatened to launch an indefinite strike in northern India from Dec. 8. AIMTC leaders say the proposed strike is aimed at pressuring the government to rescind recent agricultural reforms that critics contend are detrimental to the interests of farmers. If the action proceeds, the goods transport strike will affect Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir. AIMTC may expand the strike to additional areas. Organizers could call off the planned action if talks between farmer groups and central government representatives are successful.

If the strike occurs, the action will likely prompt commercial disruptions, such as delivery delays and possible supply chain interruptions, across affected areas of northern India. Strike supporters could implement roadblocks along highways and stage sit-in demonstrations outside government buildings. Any demonstrations or roadblocks would prompt localized ground transport disruptions. Region-wide road transport disruptions could also occur, especially if the proposed strike has significant participation. Police will likely deploy to any large protest venues, and clashes could break out if officers attempt to forcibly disperse gatherings.

Advice

Confirm all deliveries for the duration of the strike if the action proceeds. Seek alternative shipping routes for time-sensitive consignments. Avoid all protests due to possible clashes; confirm road status and plan for possible delays when attempting travel, especially in and around Delhi. Do not navigate any roadblocks as protesters may react violently. Heed all advice of security personnel.
