Japan: Additional heavy snowfall forecast across parts of Honshu and Hokkaido through Dec. 21 /update 1

Heavy snowfall, strong winds, and high waves forecast across portions of Honshu and Hokkaido, Japan, through at least Dec. 21.

Warning

Event

Heavy snowfall, high waves, and strong winds associated with a storm system are forecast across the mountainous regions of northern and central Japan through at least Dec. 21. The affected area includes prefectures located near the Sea of Japan, including the cities of Komatsu, Niigata, Akita, Aomori, Hakodate, and Sapporo. Heavy snowfall has occurred in this area since Dec. 14. Forecast models indicate snowfall totals of up to 80 cm (31 inches) are expected across the region of the coming days with the highest amounts likely to occur in Niigata, Yamagata, Akita, and Aomori prefectures.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued red heavy snowfall warnings across the affected area. Yellow warnings are in effect for strong winds, high waves, and avalanches across the affected area. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as the winter storm transits the region over the coming days. In addition to the wintry precipitation, strong wind gusts could lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard conditions are likely. Additional power outages are possible throughout the affected area; at least 10,000 residents have reportedly lost power due to the combination of heavy snow and strong winds.

Transport
The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions across the affected area over the coming days. Further traffic and commercial trucking delays are likely along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of a highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports including, but not limited to, those serving Sapporo (CTS), Niigata (KIJ), and Akita (AXT).

Advice

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area through at least Dec. 21. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
