Chad: Nationwide indefinite public sector strike ongoing as of Jan. 12

The Union des Syndicats du Tchad embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike, Jan. 11; as of Jan. 12 the strike is ongoing. The union, which itself represents other public sector unions, called the stoppage to protest the perceived failure of the government to act upon a memorandum agreed upon between the government and public workers. Affected sectors include hospitals, schools, and public administration services. The strike comes during a period in which the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, is facing increased restrictions relating to the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The strike will likely affect non-emergency health services at all government clinics and hospitals. Facilities may continue to provide emergency and COVID-19 treatment; however, it should be noted that public health services, already affected by the spread of the virus, may be scarce for the duration of the stoppage. Increased demand could disrupt services at private facilities.
