Event

A magnitude-5.2 offshore earthquake occurred near Iquique at 1024 Jan. 30. The epicenter was about 43 km (27 miles) northwest of Iquique. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 69 km (43 miles) and light shaking was probably felt throughout coastal communities of northern Chile. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Out of an abundance of caution vacate multistory buildings where shaking was felt. Monitor local media for updates.
