Transport disruptions are likely to continue along the Tohoku Expressway in Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, through Jan. 19 following a major traffic accident. Multiple vehicles collided along the roadway at around 1200 near Furukawa. At least one person has been killed and approximately 200 others injured. The accident was reportedly caused by adverse weather conditions. Unconfirmed sources report that at least 130 vehicles were involved in the accident. Authorities are working to clear the area as of 1805 Jan. 19. Authorities have closed the Tohoku Expressway between the Furukawa and Tsukidate interchanges.

Travel along the Tohoku Expressway will likely be disrupted through at least Jan. 19. Authorities will probably maintain enhanced security in the area until clearance operations conclude. Alternative roadways may face increased congestion.
