The Waitaki District Council is maintaining a boil water advisory for several areas as of Jan. 6, after heavy rainfall increased contamination at water treatment facilities in the area. The advisory applies to the Tokarahi and Windsor private water supply and public water supply in Tokarahi, Awamoko, Otematata, and Duntroon. Officials have warned residents to boil water from taps for at least two minutes before consuming and issued a notice to businesses to cease using tap water for operations. Authorities have indicated that the advisory could last for a week but warned that further rainfall forecast in the area could prolong the water disruptions.

The Waitaki District Council is approximately 115 km (71 miles) north of Dunedin.

Advice

Boil water for at least two minutes and allow it to cool prior to consumption. Follow these instructions for all water uses, including drinking, cooking, personal hygiene, and preparing food. Consider stocking up on bottled water supplies.
